A children's surrealist utopian novel about a man who discovers a hidden, diamond-mining society after crash landing his hot air balloon on the island of Krakatoa. Signed by the author in blue ink on the front free endpaper. In the original dustwrapper with the John Newbery Medal seal fixed to the upper panel, which is a little toned with a few tiny nicks to the spine tips and hinges. The contents are clean and bright throughout. A fine copy, the binding square and tight, the bottom corners with the slightest of bumps. Illustrated throughout with lovely, whimsical black and white drawings by Pène du Bois. Original decorated paper covered boards a with red cloth spine and black titles to the upper board and spine.
